About Christine Lange
Christine Lange’s creative voice developed over summers spent in the San Juan Islands, shaped by the shifting rhythms of the Salish Sea, and deepened by her experience with a paintbrush in hand while observing the tides and currents.
Today, summers find her afloat with two close friends and dogs, brush in hand, painting from the deck of her boat as the seascape changes port to port. Panels she prepares on shore carry their own souvenirs in stray blades of grass pressed into the gesso or warm sunlight sealed into the surface, infusing each painting with the feeling of a Pacific Northwest summer. Learn more about her Aluminum Composite Material (ACM) panel preparation process in the video below.
Her plein-air studies, which are salt-air-imbued and lively, return with her to the studio in winter. There she expands into larger compositions that hold the memory of summer. Discipline and spontaneity meet with her signature style that creates a glowing luminosity in her finished pieces similar to the luminism or transcendentalism art traditions, with a vibrant, vivid palette.
Lange’s work is less about capturing a scene than evoking a sensation of long days, slow warmth, and the quiet becoming that happens when you finally arrive where you’ve always belonged.
A Seasonal Process
Working outdoors in summer to capture light, then developing those studies in winter into larger studio compositions.
-
Hand-made panels carry a subtle, personal imprint from the artist’s preparation. Panels can only be made in hot summer heat and are infused with the feeling of Pacific Northwest summer. View the process below.
-
The practice of painting outdoors, directly from the landscape or subject rather than from photographs or memory. The term comes from the French phrase en plein air, meaning “in the open air.”
-
Plein-air paintings are brought into the studio and developed into larger, more detailed compositions.
Panel Preparation
Cut, sanded, coated, and left to dry in the summer sun. A stray blade of grass, a trace of texture. Each handmade panel carries a little souvenir from the process. Edges smoothed, ready for the studio or the boat.
