Studio Painting From The Boat

Winter boating in the Puget Sound region is truly lovely. If you are able to read the forecast correctly, you can find comfortable weather windows to move around from port to port. The waters are always uncrowded, there is always an open slip, and there are no lines for the great restaurants.

More importantly, the fly bridge from the boat is perfect for studio work during the winter. In the summer it’s very hot up on the fly bridge due to the solar load of the sun beating down on the 360 degree isinglass “windows.” But in the winter, with a heated blanket, the fly bridge is really a spectacular studio with all the creature comforts of home on land. On overcast days, a signature of the PNW winter, the lighting is soft and diffuse. Spectacular for getting paintings just right. Plus, it’s super cozy when the rain is falling on the roof and I can watch the seals and seagulls float by as I paint!

I prefer the boat studio to the land studio, hands down. And that’s saying something because I love my land studio.

You can find these “boat studio” paintings during the show at Fountainhead Gallery this July.
